charliesexperiment.com is a place to share my ongoing work with soundscapes, field recordings and videos.
This fascination first began with ethnographic recording in Indonesia, which led to chasing wildlife in far flung locations with a parabolic microphone. Those recordings started to get really interesting when treated as samples with modulation and processing. But the keyboard didn’t offer enough satisfaction in terms of tactile interaction with an instrument so I’ve ended up with a six string electric cello, acoustic and electric guitars, a continuum controller and a bunch of strange and wonderful electronic equipment.
I was recently in Costa Rica on the Osa peninsula, recording all manner of wildlife – that is one naturally noisy place. Four species of monkeys, a vast array of birds and insects, pounding surf – all requiring attention at different times of day. I also shot video with the Canon 5D MkII, which is destined for music video treatment in my next group of sound works.
My next trip is to Montana in May, to make water related videos and audio recordings for The Sound of Western Water project, which is destined for Ear to the Earth in October, 2010.
Please feel free to offer suggestions, feedback, even words of wisdom….
